Secrets of Strixhaven Previews Begin as Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed Reshapes Standard
Early card reveals for the April set land alongside a Standard metagame revolution driven by Elementals. The Pro Tour finals featured two fathers in one of the most compelling final matches in years.
Wizards of the Coast has started rolling out card previews for Secrets of Strixhaven, the next major Magic: The Gathering expansion set for release on April 24, 2026. The reveal comes on the heels of one of the most dramatic Pro Tours in recent memory.
Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed delivered on every front. The Top 8 was stacked with innovation, headlined by an Elementals deck built around Ashling that tore through the bracket. In one of the weekend's most memorable storylines, both finalists were fathers who had traveled to the event with their families, a reminder that competitive Magic reaches far beyond the usual demographics.
Standard's metagame has been completely reshaped. The Elementals archetype — featuring Ashling, Ouroboroid, and a suite of tribal payoffs from Lorwyn Eclipsed — now sits firmly at the top of the format. Dimir Midrange remains viable but must adapt. Meanwhile, Mono-Blue Flash has emerged as a budget-friendly contender, powered by Voracious Tome-Skimmer.
With Strixhaven spoiler season underway, all eyes turn to how the new set will interact with the current landscape. Early previews suggest a return to the college-themed plane will bring modal spells and archetype-defining uncommons that could shake up every format from Standard to Legacy.
